Cathedral of Portalegre

The Cathedral of Portalegre, a historic and architectural landmark in the heart of the Alentejo, is a living testimony to Portugal’s rich cultural heritage.

Built in the 16th century under the auspices of D. João III and supervised by the renowned architect Miguel de Arruda, the cathedral initially exhibited Renaissance features, later enriched with Baroque elements over the centuries.

With its imposing structure and ornamental details, the Cathedral of Portalegre has always been a focal point of religious and cultural life in the region. Its 28 large windows illuminate the three naves, while its facades, with its pillars and towers, bear witness to the craftsmanship of past generations.

However, the preservation of this historical heritage faces continuous challenges.

CHALLENGE:

  • Rehabilitation works, quite rigorous at the structural level, as it is a secular building of great cultural value.
  • Balancing heritage preservation with the implementation of modern technologies and sustainable practices to ensure the accessibility, safety, and energy efficiency of the cathedral without compromising its historical authenticity.

SOLUTION:

  • Adaptive Multidirectional ADAPT® System – This engineering system offers a flexible and adaptable approach to the rehabilitation of both the interior and exterior.

The versatility of ADAPT® has allowed for full adaptation to any structural configuration, proving to be an effective solution for the specific challenges presented by the cathedral, thus guaranteeing its preservation for future generations.

Thus, the partnership between the Engineering Department of METALUSA and the Cathedral of Portalegre not only represents a commitment to the preservation of historical heritage but also a testament to the innovative and adaptive spirit that continues to drive progress in preserving Portugal’s past for the future.
